We love the motto of The Straight Stitch Society: “Life is Hard, Sewing is Easy!â€. This brand new line is made up of 4 fantastic patterns: Change Your Mind Slipcover Bag, Split Personality Reversible Bag, Feed the Animals Coin Purses & Apples to Oranges Sewing Kit. The brainchild of the talented Oliver + S staff, these patterns have easy to follow instructions (as you would expect) and a delightful sense of humor! For a good chuckle, check out the full Straight Stitch Society Manifesto.
We’ve had such a fun time making up these patterns! I chose to use Denyse Schmidt’s Flea Market Fancy to make up all the samples to keep the group cohesive and also because I can’t get enough of these awesome fabrics!
Do you have a tendency to change your mind? I thought so- most ladies do! The Change Your Mind Slipcover Bag is the perfect solution to that problem! First you make the basic bag with one fabric for the outside and one for the inside. The inside is equipped with an open top pocket & zipper pocket- perfect for the stashing of all important bits and bobs. Then, you create a totally reversible slip cover that goes over the basic bag buttons on the inside! We used the green Leaf & Dot print on one side, and made a gradient spectrum using Freespirit Solids on the other. Pretty groovy!
Sometimes, we wake up feeling one way and half way through the day, it’s a whole different story! Split Personality Bag to the rescue! This completely reversible bag has a button tab closure and offers the opportunity to use 4 different fantastic fabrics. This combination looks especially fitting for a 4th of July Party, don’t you think?
In the category of “Things that are Super Cute”, the Feed the Animals Coin Purse and Apples to Oranges Sewing Kit are tied for first! Both make good use of small amounts of fabric and let you practice a variety of techniques. Did I mention they were cute? ‘Nuff said!
Do you want to make these awesome projects too? Join us the 2nd Thursday of every month for our Straight Stitch Society Meeting! Choose your favorite Straight Stitch Society pattern and come sew along with your host & helper, Olan. He will be happy to lend a hand, offer opinions & give project inspiration. This is a wonderful chance to gather regularly with your fellow crafters & sew with a little supervision!

I love these bags. Love them. If I lived a tad closer, would certainly be there.
