Pixel Quilt Detail

We made 3 quilts in Jay McCarroll’s new Habitat line, and even though I am showing this one last, it’s the one we made first! This is my most favorite for several reasons:

First, it is my favorite Habitat colorway combined with my favorite citrine green. I got to use it in the the dead of winter when I was craving spring!

Second, it felt so good to be sewing with this fabric after seeing it in process for so long. I think this is Jay’s strongest collection yet. Things really came full circle!

Third and most important, this was a true group effort! My amazing staff, Olga, Nadja & Heather, all sewed beautifully on this quilt. In fact, it was Heather’s first project after joining the Spool team.

Can you tell I am a little sentimental about this one? Pixel Quilt, I love you!

Pixel Quilt

Pixel is the largest Habitat quilt we made with a finished measurement of 78″ x 82″. We started by using our fabric die cutter to cut 4 yards of Habitat and 4 yards of citrine solid into 2.5″ strips. Then it was a big ol’ 4-patch party! It was so fun to see how the print fell inside each cut – almost like a perfect little painting in every square! Habitat looks wonderful in large blocks, as the patterns are bigger in scale, but seeing it so small makes you appreciate all the details!

After all the four patches were stitched, we threw them into a bag and let the randomness commence! Drawing out pairs of patches, and stitching them together into rows was so exciting, I couldn’t wait for them to be done. Once they were, we all stepped back and admired our handiwork- it looked even prettier than we had imagined. Such a simple pattern can do so much! Keeping the arrangement random made the quilt look completely pixel-tastic! Perfect, since one of the prints, City Planting, actually is a pixellated floral!

For the quilting, I stitched in the ditch every 3 squares, horizontally & vertically. I wanted to be sure everything stayed nice and secure! Hot pink was my choice to bind the quilt- it really makes those magenta paint splatters pop!

Pixel Quilt

As with our Habitat Piano Keys Quilt and Skyscraper Quilt, kits are now available in the shop! Each kit includes the pattern and 2 design rolls: one in Habitat and one of Freespirit’s Designer Solids in Citrine. Each roll is made up of fifty- six 2.5″ x 44″ strips, pre-cut and ready to sew! Have fun!

It turned out just lovely! Wonderful to see you at the PMQG sewing night a few weeks ago… :)

Love this! I think I’d want to make a smaller version, though. I can see myself getting easily frustrated having to quilt such a behemoth! And maybe use a color other than citrine. I am really drawn to the hot pink!

When you guys make a quilt, how do you decide what you will do for the quilting stage (ie: stitch in the ditch, straight lines a la Piano Keys, or crisscrossed diagonals like we did for beginning quilting)?
