Stitch Party Coffee Cozies

Please join us at Stitch Party this Friday from 5-8PM

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas hd Interview hd for our first project night! I thought it would be fun to add some free crafting to our usual party style. I’ve been playing around with our rainbow-tastic felt, and found it made a perfect coffee cup cozy. I used a paper cozy from the coffee shop as my template and traced the shape with my scallop edged rotary blades. Add some velcro tabs and you have the perfect canvas for making a unique cozy. No one will accidentally drink your coffee again!

Friday night, we’ll have the machines threaded, fancy rotary blades and fusible web at the ready, and our giant scrap bin open for crafting. Take advantage of the cute embroidery stitches on our machines and layer felts and fabrics to make a cozy collage. As usual, there will be food, drink and creative company. See you there!

Spring Quilt Market, Michael Miller

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

The Michael Miller display at Quilt Market was one of the prettiest at the show, and they presented one the most exciting new designers, Laura Gunn. Laura is a painter who has translated her paintings into the Lantern Bloom collection. She creates a unique color story and a beautiful layering of textures, allowing you to see the hand of the artist. The birdcages and twining trees capture the imagination and make you feel as though you’ve encountered something truly special.

Our customers are always looking for fun prints for the little ones, in particular little boys. Michael Miller always has a great variety of children’s fabrics, and these are no exception! Bot Camp is an adorable line that is perfect for little boys, or anyone that loves robots ( and let’s face it, don’t we all!). Gears, ray guns, & spaceships all make an appearance in this story of robots gone to summer camp. So cute!

If there’s one thing I know that everyone loves, it’s cute birdie fabric! I have had quite a few requests for owl fabric, so this one will soon be making it’s way to roost at Spool. I just had to have the folk art inspired birds, as well. Between these and Laura Gunn’s birds & birdcages, we should be able to happily sew with our feathered friends for quite a while!

These fabrics will start arriving starting June & July, along with a few fun surprises. It’s shaping up to be a great summer!

Wildwood Quilt

The story of Quilt Market continues with the designers of Freespirit. Right after I chatted with Ms. Butler, I got the pleasure of meeting Erin McMorris, designer of our favorite Park Slope and Wildwood collections. This girl has got it going on! She’s sweet, bright and so talented. I didn’t remember to snap a photo with her, but check out this amazing hexagon quilt with her Wildwood fabrics. You’ll be seeing lots more projects from us with her fabrics.

Valori Wells Quilt

Valori Wells and her new collection are so inspiring! We currently have a swath of her Del Hi fabric hanging in our front window at the shop, and seeing her quilts made us excited for the arrival of more fabrics from this line. She also has these adorable project cards that will soon be making an appearance at Spool.

Joel Dewberry's Deer Valley

Joel Dewberry’s new Deer Valley fabrics are stunning. This is quite possibly one my favorite things we bought at Market. Spool customers will be familiar with Joel’s woodgrain print, which I know is one of your favorites (by the way, a new shipment of quilting & home dec weight woodgrain just arrived at the shop- so many colors!). Joel stopped by as Craig and I were selecting his fabrics. He is so tall and so charming, it sold us on it even more! Look for this line at the end of June. To see more swatches, check out Joel’s website here.

Spring Quilt Market, Amy Butler

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

This past weekend, Craig and I attended the International Quilt Market in Pittsburgh. Quilt Market is a trade show where shop owners can see all the new fabrics, patterns and notions for the coming season. It’s so much fun being a customer, and we are quite pleased with our purchases. I can’t wait for you to see them! In the meantime, Craig took some great photos of our trip, so I can share some of the fun things coming in over the next few months.

Since our rooms weren’t going to be ready by the time we arrived, we went straight to the show from the airport. The whole ceiling of the convention center had windows which provided natural light! Such a welcome change from the usual fluorescent bulbs. All the better to see fabrics and take photos!

Craig, Amy Butler, & Me

Within 20 minutes we found ourselves at Amy Butler’s booth. It was gorgeous as usual and we got a chance to chat with Amy. She is so nice, and has lots of exciting things coming up. Her new line, Love, ( which wasn’t yet available at the show) will be out in August. Our Westminster Fibers pal, Elyse, told us it was looking wonderful. Of course!

Amy Butler's New Patterns

Here’s a little peek at Amy’s new patterns, due out next month. Both of these are destined to be summer essentials!

Amy Butler Softwares

One of the most exciting things we found is Amy’s new project software. She has partnered with the people at Electric Quilts to bring us 22 projects- quilts, bags & pillows all on one CD! You can make the projects as Amy designed them or use her virtual swatch gallery to customize your project. I will definitely be posting more about this, but if you can’t wait, we already have the software available in the shop and at our online store Newcastle !

Seeing Amy’s booth was incredibly inspiring and made me want to start creating right away. All this in the first hour of the show! I’ll be posting this week about the fantastic things we saw from Freespirit and Michael Miller. Stitch magazine

The new Stitch magazine from Quilting Arts has made it’s way here. It has designer interviews, advice for printing your own fabric at home, and suggestions for firing up your sewing creativity – not to mention all the awesome projects! The crazy gorgeous log cabin pillow on the cover is included in the pillow making section, and the embroidery projects are inspired. Get good advice on mixing florals and apply it to making one of the 4 super cute dresses included in this issue.

This magazine will keep you busy!! Here’s a peek at some of the garment patterns. I know we all have graduations, weddings and summer parties on the horizon- why not try one of these? Happy Sewing!

Wildwood

Wildwood

Erin McMorris’s new collection, Wildwood, arrived at the shop today! I am in love! Erin’s first Freespirit line, Park Slope, continues to be a shop favorite Horror movies , and I know these designs are destined to be as well. The fabrics are pretty, fun, and fanciful. Skirts The Five People You Meet in Heaven movies will be made (for me!) in the large sweeping florals, STAT! I am also lucky to have two new baby girls arrive in my circle that need quilts using that minty, dainty tree fabric.
