Birthday! Giveaway!

March 15th, 2009

Beware the Ides of March, ’cause you might get some free fabric! Today is our 1st birthday and to celebrate, we are having a giveaway. One year ago today we opened our doors, not quite sure what to expect. What we got was an amazing year, filled with fantastic fabrics, creativity and new friends. Just what we’d hoped for!

Looking back over the year, I’d say our biggest accomplishment was helping people get excited about sewing. We taught many newbies the basics and rekindled interest in seasoned stitchers. Connections were made with lovely new internet friends. We fell in love with sewing all over again, ourselves, seeing all the wonderful things our customers have made.

Now for the giveaway! Leave a comment telling us your biggest sewing achievement in the last year, and you could win a Heather Ross Mendocino fat quarter pack. That could mean anything from learning to sew or finally finishing that king sized quilt for your best friend’s wedding. Comments will be open until noon tomorrow, when we pick the winner.

There will be more birthday celebration ( and cupcakes!!) at this month’s Stitch Party. If you’re in the neighborhood, please join us. Thanks so much for a wonderful year!

Congratulations on your first year! I’ve heard so much from the stores (both spool & loop) that I’m sad I moved away from the neighborhood before you guys opened.

Biggest accomplishment in the past year? I made my first ever baby quilt. It’s so adorable and soft that I can’t wait to give it away to the expectant mother!

  2. Emily Says:

My biggest achievement is definitely learning to sew. I saw something on etsy that I thought was adorable, but seemed to be relatively simple to construct. I ran out to a local fabric store, picked up some fabric, and borrowed my aunt’s machine. My first project didn’t turn out pretty, but I definitely caught the bug! I bought my own machine, and now hundreds of yards of fabric later, I feel sad if I can’t squeeze in some sewing time every day. My 7 year old son is interested in learning to sew now too!

  3. m.a. Says:

happy birthday, spool! i love your site!

when i was pregnant with my now 8-week-old, i had MUCH anxiety about my baby boy’s health. in order to work through this anxiety and connect with my precious babe, i went to town sewing all of the bedding for his room, a quilt for the twin bed by the crib, and the fantastic bird mobile you posted on your site. my baby’s name is wren, so the bird mobile is just perfect! before this giant sewing outbirst, my sewing projects included only small baby quits and “crazy pants” for my older son. for pics of wren’s room, check out http://divinitygirl.blogspot.com/2008/11/halloween-wrap-up.html and http://divinitygirl.blogspot.com/2008/11/halloween-wrap-up.html.

    thanks for the inspiration!

  4. *karen Says:

Hi! I think my biggest sewing achievement was finally altering a pattern so that the garment would fit me better (in this case, the trapeze dress from Weekend Sewing). Here’s the photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kaiwa_4/3298766406/

  5. Bev Adam Says:

Just attempting to sew and not being scared of it was a big plus for me. Though I haven’t attempted any clothes yet I did your bird pattern and was really pleased with myself. It now lives in NYC after I did a swap on Ravelry. Hope to make a skirt next. Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the good work!

  6. Anne Says:

My biggest achievement is that I am finally back to sewing after the birth of our daughter! I used to think the time would never come when I would have time to sew again, but now that we are all sleeping, I have naptimes to churn out quilts, bibs, burp cloths and softie toys!

  7. amanda Says:

Happy happy birthday! I wish I could join you for your party! :)

My biggest sewing achievement this year was definitely the baby quilt I made. I picked all the fabrics, made the quilt top, did the quilt sandwich, quilted, AND hand-bound (a special achievement, since I used to hate hand sewing – love it now) a quilt for baby #2, due in June. Hooray!

  8. Stacy Says:

My biggest achievement was actually learning to sew, purchasing my own sewing machine and completing several little projects to get me going! This year I am hoping to work on a quilt!

  9. Kelly Titmus Says:

I have had my biggest year of sewing. I have been making diaper bags as gifts for a few years now and have made around 50 of those. This last year I took the basic knowledge I have of making quilts and have made a king size quilt for my bed, 2 Christmas lap quilts, 2 twin quilts for my boys and am free motion quilting for the 1st time on my daughters queen size quilt. Needless to say I am addicted and obsessive. I love fabric!!

  10. Jodie Says:

Oh! Happy Birthday! I love reading your blog!
My biggest sewing accomplishment this year has definitely got to be designing my own handbag! The even better news is that people like it so much that they buy them and I have been able to put my toddling twins in Mommy’s Day Out!

  11. kangaroo Says:

Let’s see…I made six Christmas lap quilts for family, that was the biggest achievement in terms of production; but it didn’t stretch my abilities really. For that answer I’d have to say the one quilt square I sent in for Project Improv, as it was my first attempt at improvisational quilting and I LOVED it. And my biggest emotional achievement was being a part of a community quilt for my midwife. So does it count if I gave you three answers? I hope I win–I have always been a fan of Heather’s fabrics and don’t own a single one. YET. Thank you so much for the great giveaway and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  12. Jennie Says:

My biggest achievement was getting to the place in sewing where I realized there was a “formula” for most of the things I sewed, and that I could change it up to come up with my own variations and improvements for me.

  13. Melissa Crowe Says:

Oh, it’s too hard to narrow down! This is the year EVERYTHING has happened! I got a real, functioning sewing machine; I began to sew almost daily; I got over my fear that only “certain” people can sew well; I made my daughter’s Halloween Costume completely from scratch; I sewed almost every birthday-party-present she needed this year; I created my first tutorial; I began to feel that I might have something real to contribute to this amazing, talented, generous community. GOOD YEAR.

  14. Megan Says:

Happy Birthday! Wish I could come to your actual shop to celebrate! :)

This year I made a ukulele case without a pattern. I just traced my uke, used my brain, and figured out how to make 2 types of fabric, foam, a 30″ zipper, quilt binding, and a seatbelt-width lash strap into a cute, functional case. And in a coup d’etat for my general sewing impatience, I took the time to add a pocket with a decorative vinyl element BEFORE I started sewing anything…instead of my normal route, which involves desperately trying to add such things when all is said and done and impossible. Pretty big achievement for me!

  15. Lynn Osborne Says:

I don’t know if you could really call it an accomplishment but I finally decided to invest in a “real” sewing machine instead of always fighting with my entry level $149 Singer. I have a lifelong passion for sewing and many other creative things. It was finally time to make an investment for *me*! I have been sewing up a storm ever since, no one big project, but many small ones. Happy birthday and thanks for the chance to win!

  16. Starla Says:

mine was definitely finishing a wallhanging that i had been working on for goodness knows how long. and it felt awesome when it was done! i wish i could say i had finished my postage stamp quilt, but darn it…that one i’m still working on. i’m collecting 1 inch squares from as many people as i can. THAT will definitely be an achievement when it’s finished. :)

  17. Katie Says:

    Happy Birthday!

I taught myself to sew this year! My first achievement (what I taught myself to sew on) was my diaper bag http://anditstarts.blogspot.com/2009/01/so-here-it-is-after-much-hard-work-i.html and then I went straight to those wonderful birds to make my daughter’s crib mobile! http://anditstarts.blogspot.com/2009/01/haileys-crib-mobile.html

So thank YOU for all the inspiration!!!!

  18. Lise Says:

My biggest sewing achievement this year was devoting the closet in my bedroom to sewing supplies, organizing it, and adding a desk near it. Making a dedicated space means that I can sit down and sew so much more easily…and so I do! I’ve made clothes for my newborn, started a quilt, done some “wardrobe refashion,” made toys, and more. Yay! Thanks for the opportunity to win, and happy anniversary!

  19. wendy Says:

Happy Birthday! Wish I was in the neighborhood. I think my biggest accomplishment in the last year was starting my blog and figuring out how to show off all my quilts in clickable photos on the front page side. Took me forever to figure out! I hope I win! I never win anything.

  20. Kim Says:

Happy Birthday! My greatest sewing accomplishment has simply been the volume of sewing I’ve done. I’ve refound my passion for sewing! Everything from wall pockets, bags, curtains, baskets. . . it is SEW much fun!!!

  21. Meg Says:

Here’s to a fabulous year. Bravo, and thanks for inspiring us out here to keep sewing.

My biggest accomplishment this year was a formal dress for a Mardi Gras ball. I managed to create something that looked fabulous, even next to all the expensive gowns at the party. And because I spent a paltry $40 or so on fabric, I tore up the dance floor and didn’t worry about it getting snagged.

  22. Kristy Says:

Happy Birthday! My biggest achievement was learning how to sew clothing, and then making myself a summer wardrobe of dresses. I plan to do that again this year, too!

  23. Louchia Says:

I’m not the most talented sewing person, but I learned to sew years ago and I even achieved a night gown, which I’m really roud of! I really enjoy your blog, it’s a lot of inspiration for me, for sewing and also for scrapbooking, since all those colorfull fabrics are so inspiring! (excuse my english, it’s not my maternal language)

Thanks for this chance to win!

  24. CassH Says:

    Happy Birthday!

I thin my greatest sewing accomplishment was making my prom dress last year – having only sewn only one dress before that too!! It definitely made me feel great!

  25. Lindsay Says:

My biggest sewing achievement has been finally getting round to making my first garment – a jumper dress for my daughter from the Amy Butler Little Stitches book. Prior to that I’d always shied away from trying to sew a garment thinking they might be a bit beyond me, but I was very pleased with the way it came out in the end: http://www.flickr.com/photos/clothcat/3241105814/in/set-72157603333179533/ . Hopefully I’ll get the time to go on to make something for myself now (not easy with two kids).

  26. Fulvia Says:

Congratulations for sharing the joy and satisfaction of something that can also be very productive and comforting. In the past so many months I have reintegrated hand sewing into my work, which was often primarily machine-made. I love “mark making”! Thanks-

  27. Amy Kandathil Says:

Happy Birthday, Spool! I hope year #2 is as great as year #1.

This past year, I learned how to sew. I had no idea how to do it until my grandma opened up her big closet of fabric and let me take whatever I wanted to practice on. She also gave me a sewing machine, a rotary cutter, and lots of advice. When I told her I was afraid of giving sewn gifts that had some minor mistakes, she said to me, “Even mistakes make it a real, authentic creation. That helped me as I ventured through the experience of making about 30 quilts and wall hangings.”

So my biggest accomplishment this year, through making about 5 bags, a lap quilt, and a few aprons, is to take those tiny mistakes and look at them as stories to tell! My grandma is the best!

  28. Melissa Says:

Happy birthday! My biggest sewing accomplishment this year was finding my confidence. I took a lot of chances and even though not everyone was a success, I learned so much from all of them. Slip covering my sofa was probably the biggest risk and the biggest success by far. Having the support and encouragement from so many friends, in real life and online made all the difference in the world.

  29. Sherry Says:

Congrats on your first year and what a great blog AND shop!
    I wish i was closer!

I just completed a baby quilt for my little one I am expecting in July. I’ve never made a quilt before, so I m quite pleased with myself! I used some squares from my own baby blanket as a keep sake.
    Thanks!

  30. Brittney Says:

Happy Birthday! My greatest sewing accomplishment this past year was selling my things at a craft sale for the first time. The show itself was kind of a bust, but everyone who came by my booth loved my work and really gave me a sense of achievement on the sewing front. My goal for this year is completing more projects, including a number of larger quilts.

  31. courtney Says:

I am moving to NJ this summer and will definately take a day or two or ten to come see your store. My biggest accomplishment has been creating my first quilt for my baby boy!

  32. Rachael Says:

My biggest sewing achievement was finally getting a blog, and posting to it regularly. Now I have lots of love and support from other crafty people from all over!

  33. Amanda Says:

My biggest accomplishment of the year was my first quilt. Granted, it was a doll quilt, but it was quite a learning experience.

  34. Thea R Says:

Happy Birthday and congratulations! My big sewing accomplishment this last year has been re-acquainting myself with my love of sewing through lots of little projects (mostly to do with the arrival of my first child): diaper bag, change pad, blanket, wool diaper soakers, etc. And for the year ahead I am looking forward to making clothes for my daughter from some Oliver+S patterns and hopefully a my first quilt with some amazing fat quarters from Spool;)

  35. Sheri Says:

Happy One Year!!! You guys have been very inspiring! I think my biggest accomplishment was creating my favorite quilt ever – no pattern or quilt blocks, it just showcased the great red and yellow fabrics – giving it to my sis and having her LOVE it! Very fun to have someone appreciate something you’ve enjoyed creating so much. Thanks!

  36. Michaela Says:

    Happy Birthday!!!
Well, my biggest accomplishment last year was to finally starting my own crafty blog. Somehow it also motivated me to finished a bunch of unfinished projects and try out new techniques. I continue in that this year. I would like to tackle free motion quilting.

  37. CBear Says:

    WOW! Happy 1 year!

My biggest accomplishment: learning to use, love and appreciate my sewing machine!

  38. Trisha Says:

My biggest accomplishment? Not starting what you did! But I did just finish my very first sun dress on my very first sewing machine, and I’m quite proud of that. My sister found it so cute I am now sewing one up for her! I even created custom table linens for my husband’s and my first Thanksgiving away from our families. And not only have I learned to sew, but I’ve taught myself how to knit… not just scarves, but sweaters and baby blankets! It seems work gets in the way of my crafts these days, and work is at a pottery shop!

  39. Michelle Says:

Happy Birthday! My biggest accomplishment this past year was to figure out how to do free motion quilting, all on my own, just using online tutorials & forums for advice. :)

  40. Marisa Says:

My achievement was making matching baby quilts for my new baby and my sister’s new baby. It was a lot to get them done and hand quilt them both, but I finished finally, and they look awesome both together and separately.

  41. April Says:

My biggest sewing achievement this year was helping my 10 year old daughter make her first quilt. Her Grandma and I encouraged her to enter it in a quilt show and she won first place in the youth category, the prize being a brand new Bernina! She was very proud and said it was her “best day ever.” I was so happy I cried. It’s very exciting to be passing the sewing skills on to the next generation.

    Congrats on your first birthday!

  42. Meghan Says:

Congrats! My biggest accomplishments this year have been starting my first quilt (which is currently pieced, basted and ready for quilting) and sewing a dress that I’ll be proud to wear to my brother’s wedding.

  43. Laure Says:

My biggest achievement this year is getting back into sewing. I fell in love with making bags! Thanks for the giveaway!

  44. Sally Says:

My biggest achievement was finally finishing the quilt I started over a year ago for my mother-in-law, just in time to give it to her for Christmas. I basically sat at my machine and sewed for 3 days straight, but thanks to snow days I was stuck inside and it turned out great!

  45. Kinzie Says:

Happy Birthday! My biggest accomplishment this year is starting my first patchwork quilt. Figuring out the measurements meant math… dun dun dun, but I got it done and just finished all 35 quilt blocks and somehow my math was right and they turned out great. Me and math working out, that’s a big accomplishment! (Now I just have to finish the quilt before my daughter learns how to climb out of her crib…)

  46. Jessica Says:

My biggest accomplishment is becoming comfortable with sewing to the point where it’s now a major hobby. I have always played around with a needle and thread, but now I’m teaching myself how to make more that clothes for my dolls. I’m 22, so I still have a lot of time to learn, but I must say that I’m in love. I love playing with ideas and trying tutorials to make things my own way.

  47. jessica Says:

    Happy birthday!

My biggest achievement this year was finding my sewing confidence. I’ve always stuck to small projects that I thought were in my ‘range’ – but that limited me too much. I finally told myself that I could do it, and I’ve since made a pretty summer dress, reversible apron, and I’m going to take the plunge and make a quilt. Sewing isn’t about perfection, it’s about imagination :)

  48. Angel Funk Says:

My biggest sewing accomplishment this year was buying a real sewing machine! I had one that didn’t work well, and was constantly frustrated every time I started a new project. Now I can actually finish something without wanting to pull my hair out!

  49. Allison Says:

My biggest sewing achievement in the last year has been to get off my behind and start finishing up all the UFO’s and WIP’s from the hear before! It feels good.

  50. Meem Says:

My biggest sewing achievement last year was finishing three baby quilts ALL in time for the birth! Also, they were all surprise-sexes, so I had to design three unisex quilts. Phew!

  51. Kendra Says:

Making the first dress I have ever made- for my friend’s wedding. I still can’t believe I did it!

  52. tina Says:

    Congrats on your first year!
My best accomplishment was making my son a blanket and not placing it in a “to do” pile! :)

  53. Stacey Says:

my biggest accomplishment would be teaching myself how to quilt, doing an awesome job, teaching myself how to applique, and doing a great job, and soon gonna be teaching myself to embroider. (yeah, want to broaden my horizons for quilting) that has all been since this past thanksgiving!!

  54. MichelleB Says:

My biggest sewing achievement was making a quilt – and actually finishing it!! – so that I could give it to my girlfriend.

  55. Megan Says:

Sewing my daughter’s first Christmas dress was my biggest accomplishment. I hope to continue the tradition of making a holiday dress each year for her.

  56. Misty Says:

My biggest achievement in the past year is that I made about 35 of your cute little fabric birds before Christmas and gave them away as presents. It was the first sewing project I’ve attempted since about the 8th grade.
My friends are still telling me how much they enjoy the handmade birds.

  57. Jenn Says:

    Congratulations!
Biggest sewing accomplishment : finishing my daughter’s “big kid bed” quilt (twin size). Finishing a quilt is more satisfying than I could have imagined.

  58. Sarah S Says:

Congrats on your birthday! I just got back into sewing in the past year, and my biggest accomplishment was sewing a bag with an interior zipper pocket and magnetic closure. These were all new to me, and it felt really goo to get it right!

  59. Greedy Nan Says:

I’ve been sewing for a long time but this past year I’ve been really pushing myself to finish things off! To me, this is a great achievement – I could be finishing off things for some time though. I probably deserve to have a new project to start on as a treat!

  60. jeni Says:

My biggest accomplishment was helping my friend Veronica learn to sew. She got her first sewing machine for for Christmas 2007 and she didn’t use it until December 2008. I helped her hem curtains for her daughters room and sew a stuffed elephant.

  61. susi Says:

congrats! i want to visit one day….

my biggest new achievement is being able to find the time to sew and making a quilt top in one day.

i was so happy now im cookin

  62. Bridget Says:

My biggest achievement was finally getting a sewing machine! I’d been wanting a new one (mine just up and died) for a couple of years, and last year was the year.

    Happy 1st Birthday!

  63. Kelly Says:

    Happy One Year Birthday!

I’m pretty new to sewing, I made my first log cabin pillow cover and love it. I was always scared of quilting (still am a little) but finishing the pillow and seeing that it turned out great really inspired me to have a go at a quilt. Not to mention all the daily inspiration from sites like Spool and others. It is a wonderful blogging world!

    Thanks!

    Kelly

  64. Penny Guglielmoni Says:

The biggest sewing accomplishment this year was a simple task to most, but for me as a first time grandmotherit was big. I made a reversible a-line dress for my granddaughter and embroidered her monogram on it. I also made multiple baby quilts, but my biggest acheivement was definitely the dress.

  65. Amy @ parkcitygirl Says:

Happy Birthday! My biggest accomplishment this last year was free-motion quilting on my domestic machine. And being a blogger – the community is fabulous! :)

  66. Jen Says:

Congratulations on your 1 year anniversary! And what an excellent giveaway. I love looking at your site to get ideas and inspiration…

My biggest sewing accomplishment in the past year has been to start making quilts. I’ve finished a few quilt tops in the past few months and am excited to keep going. My favorite was a wonky log cabin quilt that I made for a friend. It was smaller than I wanted but it was totally made from stash fabric- which rocked! Its here, if you wanna look: http://haphazard-jen.blogspot.com/2009/02/swap-loot-stash-and-wip.html
And I can’t wait to get it back from the quilter so that I can sew the binding on and send it out…

  67. Esther Says:

I learned to sew this year! I took classes with the Philly Sewing Collective and at Spool- I love your shop and hope to enroll in another class soon!

  68. lahuitrefrite Says:

I discovered Spool during a business trip to Philadelphia in November. Now I’m always looking for [more] reasons to drive north.

I’m a begining quilter, and while I’m really proud that last year I finished a baby quilt in under year (hand quilting, too!), I’m most proud of getting my mom involved in one of my projects and together we finished a Christmas quilt I started a few years ago. Mom hand-quilted the entire thing, her first time quilting.

    I’m trying a skirt next!

  69. Karen Says:

I had a great sewing year because I started my new Etsy site selling bags, and each one gets more fun and better to do! I love Heather Ross and have had my eye on this line for a long time now. Thanks for the inspiration!

  70. anne Says:

I made a little dress for my 4 year old.

  71. sarah Says:

i made my first bag AND my first quilt–all because of you guys and the intro to sewing class i took. yay!

  72. Christina Says:

I completed my first baby quilt… it was delightful!

  73. Angie Harris Says:

Learning to sew!!! I just started my first sewing class a few weeks ago and I’m hooked!!!

  74. Evelyn Says:

I got into quilting last year, and finished my first “practice” quilt (a doll quilt) and my first “real” quilt (throw-sized, just finished last week!). I also started on my goal of doing some volunteer work, by joining the local Project Linus group. I’m almost done with my first quilt to be donated!

  75. carie Says:

My biggest sewing accomplishment was designing and sewing a cute vintage inspired dress with NO Pattern! I would love some free Fabric!

    See it here:http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3140/2699133498_b92a88611b_o.jpg

  76. Amy Craig Says:

My biggest achievement was finishing my first quilt. I hope to have my second quilt finished this month. Congratulations on your first anniversary. Looking forward to many more!

  77. Kate Says:

My biggest achievement was finishing up projects that have been gathering dust–a color wheel quilt from Last Minute Patchwork, a new queen sized quilt for my guest room, a Weekender Bag by Amy Butler, and more. It feels great to clean out the To Do pile and add more to the Enjoy Now pile.

  78. Alison Says:

Happy Birthday! My biggest accomplishment has been to start making some of my own clothes. A friend and I made a New Year’s resolution not to buy any new clothes for the whole year. The upside to that, apart from the money I’m saving, is that it finally forced me to learn how to make basic clothes (skirts, tops, scarves, dresses, etc.) for myself.

Fingers crossed for the free fabric!

  79. Tacha Says:

    Happy birthday!

Coincidentally it is also my birthday today ;-)

My biggest sewing achievement this past year has been to crack zips! I have always been so afraid of them. Now give me a glue stick and I am away!

  80. julia Says:

Congratulations on such a wonderful first year!! I think my biggest “accomplishment” was finding a friend to sew with!! I love social sewing!!

  81. Lynne in NY Says:

Congratulations on your one year birthday (my birthday is in March too!) My biggest achievement this past year is sewing something that is not a quilt. I have enjoyed quilting for over 20 years, but until recently I did not have the confidence to make garments. First I made flannel pajama pants (I love them) and then I made a pair for one of my sons (he loves them) and then I made him a flannel bathrobe!! As I gain confidence I’ll sew something to wear out of the house. Making quilts remains my therapy, but garment sewing is my new found excitement.

  82. jodie Says:

    Congratulations and happy birthday!

My biggest achievement this year was to start sewing again, 25 years after I last attempted it and hated it. Gosh the damage those awful patterns in home economics classes at school did to my creativity. This year I dragged out the machine, found some great tutorials and fabric online and fell in love with sewing. Half my daughters summer wardrobe was sewn by me and she was so delighted.

  83. Amie in Minneapolis Says:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! Only great things can keep coming your way!

My biggest achievement was sewing my seven year old’s Halloween costume. She wanted to be an Italian chef. I couldn’t find a costume to buy so I pulled out my sewing machine. After modifying a child’s police costume pattern, I came up with something that was close to a chef’s jacket, chef’s hat and pants. Having never put sleeves on anything (or made any clothing of any type on the sewing machine) I have to say I learned a lot from that project. I also used my sewing machine more times after Halloween than I had the rest of the year. I think I fell in love all over again!

  84. Nichole Says:

Yeah for birthdays! My biggest sewing accomplishment this year was the dent I made in unfinished projects (mostly quilts). Some of them have been sitting for too long and it has been fun to revisit them and finish them up.

  85. Kerry Says:

My biggest achievement (and the best satisfaction) was just this last weekend. A friend and I spent two days volunteering at the Melbourne Stitches and Craft Show and realized that people attend such shows not knowing how to thread a needle let alone sew. Very, very satisfying to see them walk away with a simple flower brooch and they had never sewn before. Priceless!

  86. Sue Cahill Says:

    Congrats on your milestone!!

My biggest achievement was to finish hand piecing all 121 Civil War Diary blocks. Now I have to put the quilt together and hand quilt it. That will probably be my biggest achievement for 2009.

Thanks for the chance to win some excellent fabric.
Sue Cahill (sbonetsue at yahoo dot com)

  87. Wendy Says:

I still feel very much like a beginner, so everything I sew feels like the biggest accomplishment yet. Perhaps my biggest/favorite was just whipping out a reversible polar fleece hat to eliminate my husband’s objection to going out for a walk (his ears would get too cold and we couldn’t find the one I’d knitted, so long ago) so fast and without a pattern. I just measured his head and crown depth, drew out a contoured shape and within 15 minutes he had a hat (ugly and as hell but toasty warm for his noggin and sensitive earses) and we were walking out the door with the dogs.
Of course, it may be one of the ugliest things I’ve made, since I didn’t really think about the flexibility of the doouble layered fleece fabric and should have made it out of at least four shaped gores. It looks weird, but he won’t give it back and it’s the hat he grabs when it’s cold outside.

I wish Spool was my local shop, I love your class list.

  88. kayla_d Says:

Very recently, I was able to finish the crib skirt for the room of my baby-on-the-way. It wasn’t such a difficult project, but seemed to take forever because it was the step I wanted to finish before giving up my sewing room! So it’s kind of a step in the opposite direction (losing my dedicated sewing space), but I know this baby girl will make it worth it!

  89. Melissa Says:

My biggest accomplishment was sewing all of my sister’s Christmas presents!

  90. Jessica Says:

I woke up on an ordinary day back in October, dragging my sleepy self through a monotonous daily routine. On this particular day, I stopped into a pet store browsing for a new collar for my yellow lab, Ocean. As the owner of a wide array of previously purchased dog wear, the selection was nothing new, and I wanted something fresh and modern.

I looked at the construction of the collars and asked myself “would it be possible to make my own dog collar?”. Hmmm. I didn’t have a sewing machine and hadn’t sewn since 4H class when I was 10. But the method looked simple enough.

Fast forward to now, and I not only know how to sew my own dog collars, I also am launching the start of a collar & leash company creating sustainable wares for dogs. I’ve always been a crafter, and adore the addition of sewing to my hobbies. It’s exciting to have a new pastime that is both fun and useful. I am working on building my sewing skills bit by bit. In additon to collars, leashes, and plush dog toys, I also dabbled in my own fun projects. I sewed an adorable 50′s stlye apron for my mom, and an edgey skull & crossbones headband for my sister; just a start to the projects I hope to complete & enjoy with my new discovery and enchantment with sewing.

  91. Tara Says:

I had a girl last year and finally busted out my sewing machine to make her a dress!! It was so gratifying to see it done and on her! And now I am addicted to little sewing projects for babies and my kids, and am always looking for fun new fabric!!

  92. Barbara Snyder Says:

Happy Birthday to You! And congratulations on your first birthday! I agree, you have certainly created excitement about sewing for me! I’ve been sewing burp cloths and blankets and other baby goodness items, and I even made myself a coat! Thanks for helping to get this gal back in the saddle again!

  93. Addie Says:

Happy Birthday! I don’t live too far from your shop, so I hope to come by some day.

My biggest achievement last year (and so far this year) has been making clothes that I actually wear. I’ve spent a lot less money buying clothes, but what I spend on fabric probably cancels out any savings…

  94. Stephanie Says:

I truly had a BIG accomplishment…after having 8 applique blocks finished and 2 mostly finished I couldn’t not seem to find the motivation to get them all done. This has been 8 years they’ve been sitting in a pile in th closet. A blog friend and appliquer extraordinaire offered to finished the 2 blocks and make the last 2. I mailed her a box and in January I received the box back. Now all I had to do was sew the block together. I have the border fabric and backing ready to go and then it’ll be ready for the machine quilter.

  95. Suzy Says:

It would have to be my first real quilt. Still working on it though…

  96. Maya Says:

It was a very hard year at work and I had too little spare time and muse left…. But I did a litte – one step at a time: bought my sewing machine, learnt how to thread and use it, and managed to produce some babie’s softies – baby’s blocks, a tilda snail, some owls and a little chicken :-) I hope in the coming year to take some classes and sew much more
    Thanks for the lovely giveaway,
    Maya

  97. Carol Says:

I made my first quilt…okay it’s just a lap quilt, but I LOVE it! I took a basic quilting class, finally, at age 50. This is something I’ve wanted to do my whole life but just never seemed to find the right time. It was fun and I loved picking out the fabrics…so many choices! And then I went out and bought a new sewing machine to replace my 30+ year old portable. Maybe I’ll actually make that bed quilt now!

  98. Deb Says:

After drooling over other people’s posted creations for a long time I finally plucked up the courage to buy my first sewing machine for my 37th birthday (in Feb). My biggest accomplishment so far is boking my first sewing lesson which is tomorrow! i am so excited and nervous at the same time as i am not very coordinated and this all seems so intimidating, but the urge is there and it trumps the fear this time!

  99. Harriet Says:

My biggest achievement was making a skirt guard for my bicycle. I made the pattern myself out of newspaper then cut the pieces out of a pair of net curtains that used to hang in my Gran’s living room. It fit perfectly and I keep getting comments from strangers about what a pretty bike I have.

  100. Jaime Says:

    Happy Birthday!
I think my biggest accomplishment was making my diaper bag – the AB Modern Bag pattern that I scaled down. There were so many pieces to cut, all that interfacing, but I stuck with it and my bag looks amazing!
I’m also happy that I started a sewing blog. :)
    Jaime

  101. katy Says:

Happy Birthday and thanks for the give away! My biggest sewing achievement was leaving my beloved machine in the States when we moved to Europe and purchasing a Euro machine here.

  102. Edith Says:

Happy birthday! My biggest accomplishment was starting to sew regularly. I’ve always been kind of an off and on sewer, but now I’m doing it almost every day!

  103. Lia Says:

    Happy birthday!
This year I made my first (and second..and third..and FOURTH!) item of clothing which I proceeded to wear not only in public, but to work! More than the quantity, I’m very proud of the fact that I’ve now modified the pattern to fit me better than any off-the-rack clothing I’ve purchased.

  104. Cassie Says:

Congratulations on a great year. Hopefuly there will be many more to come that are jsut as fantastic.

My greatest achivement so far this year has been to finnish my first ever quilt! Now on to the next, and the next and the next…

  105. Anna Says:

First, I got back into sewing. I think it was finishing a messenger bag for my sister’s birthday–*before* her birthday! (You can see it here: http://stitchbitch.blogspot.com/2009/02/sisterhood-moving-on.html

Your shop also helped renew a friendship. Last March (March 28th to be exact) a friend called to see if I wanted to check out the new fabric store on South Street. We had a great time picking out fabric and patterns. Thanks!

  106. Lisa Says:

Congratulations on your first anniversary – wished I lived closer – I love the look of the classes you offer. My biggest achievement this year was completing an hand appliqued quilt for my daughter.

  107. Emily Says:

Congrats on the 1 year anniversary!!
My biggest accomplishment? I think taking the leap to begin sewing… I have always wanted to sew and two months ago I decided to learn. I have to admit – I am proud of myself for taking the intimidating leap. I have made my son a quilt, several applique tees, a couple bags and a few other odds and ends. I love sewing and it’s a great way to feed my creative side!

  108. Michele C Says:

Great first year! I’ve enjoyed following your blog, and I’ve used a number of your tutorials and suggestions. My biggest accomplishment was finally getting some stippling quilting done on some small art quilts. I love it, and I’m glad I finally made myself figure it out! Hope you have a great second year.

  109. Amy s. Says:

my biggest sewing achievement in the last year was learning to sew! since then i have tackled many projects, but my favorite are these puffy baby quilts that i made for friends.

  110. Sheridan Says:

My biggest sewing achievement in the last year? I would say actually getting to use the machine with a brand new baby in the house. Completely unexpected, and completely wonderful!

  111. Lyn Says:

Congrats on your 1 year anniversary!

My biggest accomplishment would be: To have learnt how to sew!
And after weeks of sewing by hand, I finally bought a sewing machine yesterday =)

Here’s to more anniversaries to come!

  112. Kim C. Says:

Congrats on your year! I love your fun store, and I’m glad I found you and all your cute fabrics and patterns. My biggest accomplishment this year was finishing a quilt for my mom for mother’s day (shhh)- (that’s a big accomplishment for me, while trying to entertain my 4 kids too) it’s one of those projects you just want to keep but can’t- so I’m sure I’ll be in soon for more fabric to make me one too. Thanks for the fun year and a chance for free fabric!

  113. Johanna Says:

My biggest accomplishment was building my business Kaya’s Kloset from a hobby to a real business with my baby shoes in stores across the country and a big online following!

I wish I was close to Spool, I’d love you to be my fabric store, but if I’m in Philly, I’m coming straight to you. Love the blog!

  114. Jen Says:

My biggest sewing accomplishment has actually been getting organized. I have set up a little corner in our family room where I can keep my sewing machine set up all the time. This allows me to squeeze my projects into the short bursts of time I have. It also means that I am sewing a lot more than when I had to set up my machine each time I had to sew. I’ve also been enjoying making clothes for my daughter. This has been my first step into making clothes!

  115. Laura Says:

My biggest accomplishment this past year was definitely sewing most of my families Christmas gifts and getting them in the mail so they could actually open them on the big day. I’m notorious for IOUs, so I’m really proud of this little feat.

  116. Darcy Says:

My biggest sewing accomplishment in the past year was learning to quilt and completing several! The binding was the most challenging part and I was thrilled to be able to take a class at my local quilting shop that taught that part. I’m feeling more confident with each quilt I complete and am even moving on to free-motion quilting. Oh and building my fabric stash!

  117. Nancy Says:

    Happy Birthday!
My biggest sewing accomplishment was my wedding dress! I got married in September and I don’t regret the decision to make it. It was a simple, grecian style dress but it means so much to me.

  118. Cami Says:

Congrats! Happy Birthday! My biggest accomplishment this year has been to make clothes for my son. He was born in October and I have made overalls, a hat and a few pairs of pants. I’m going to attempt shirts next!

  119. Krista Says:

My biggest accomplishment was sewing things that matter, with limited sewing knowledge or experience. Pregnant myself and with several friends expecting, I sewed four baby slings and a nursing cover: promoting breastfeeding and bonding with babies while also looking tres chic!

  120. rebecca m. Says:

happy birthday spool! i love your little store. my biggest accomplishment was finishing a blanket for my nephews made from an adorable collection of sock monkey inspired fabric – did i mention i started the blanket three years ago? :-D

  121. erin Says:

My biggest sewing achievement this year has been gaining enough confidence to teach several friends the basics of sewing. Even though I’ve been in front of a machine for more than 20 years, I’ve always been so unsure of myself that I was too afraid to share my knowlege with others. In the past year I’ve finally been able to set three friends down with a pile of fabric and a machine and show them the basics. The first project I did with all three was sewing your sweet little fabric birds!

  122. Jeanne McBrayer Says:

I made a baby quilt for my niece who is expecting a little girl. Then I made a dust ruffle, pillow, organizer, and bumpers to match. Now she has the nursery all ready for the sweet little one.

  123. Lynn Says:

Wow, a year! Congratulations! My biggest sewing achievement this year was finally finishing a quilt that I bought the fabrics for in japan. Now i’ll always have something to remember this trip by!

  124. Clare Says:

Oh congratulations! I love birthday celebrations. In the past year I have made my first quilt ( done a few now : ))all hand stitched in spirals!Eight weeks of blisters : ) And I have begun to earn a living from selling my handstitched toys. All very exciting and a wonderful achievement for me.Looking forward to more of the same.

  125. ashley Says:

happy birthday to you! since having my daughter (also almost exactly a year ago) i have been inspired to hand make toys, accessories and clothing for her! i received a sewing machine for Christmas and in january of this year i made my very first stitch! i look forward to my “crafting hour” after tucking our daughter into bed so much and i thank your blog for giving me many ideas! i am still very much a novice, but i do enjoy sewing incredibly much!

  126. gwensmom Says:

Happy first anniversary! You have put together a great giveaway.

My biggest sewing achievement was quilting a crib quilt on my little sewing machine. I nearly tore my hair out getting it done, but it brought $110 at a charity auction!

    Pic here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/71372091@N00/3258559215/in/set-1520337/

  127. Chrissy Says:

Happy Birthday, Spool! I just learned to sew this past year so pretty much every project has been a milestone for me. I think I’m most proud of the 10 pairs of lounge pants I made for the kiddos in my life for Christmas, and the doll I made using a Wee Wonderfuls pattern.

  128. jessica m Says:

my biggest sewing accomplishment this year was to actually take the time to sew!! getting into all of the great blogs out there (spool being one of my favorites, of course!) has helped tremendously in terms of providing great ideas and inspiration. thanks! and happy birthday!!

  129. Pauline Says:

My biggest accomplishment was finishing making a king size quilt for my bed.

  130. Andrea T. Says:

I think my biggest accomplishment in sewing is gaining the confidence to try things without a pattern, to take the ideas in my head, sketch them out and sew, not entirely sure of the outcome but loving the process. More often than not it’s worked and that has given me the confidence to keep running with my ideas!

Thanks for all the inspiration you share with those of us too far away to visit you in person!!

  131. dianosaurus Says:

    Happy Birthday! here’s mine:
    1. finding my niche in hand-stitching felts
    2. scoring a sewing machine for free!!! =D

  132. Julianna Says:

happy birthday! after years of talking about sewing and never doing it, i made a stuffed scottie dog to give a friend at her baby shower. it was such a hit!

  133. Veronica Says:

The last time I sewed anything was when I was 16, but I just got a sewing machine for Christmas and I wanna sew everything now. My biggest accomplishment so far is the blanket I made for my husband which he affectionately calls his “gamer blanket.”

  134. Dawn Says:

My biggest sewing accomplishment this year was finishing my “Journey of a Quilter”!! And I love it!

  135. Courtney Says:

Hooray for Spool! I’m very glad you are in Philly!

My biggest accomplishment is one I should have tried earlier! I put a zipper in something! I think the basting helped…

  136. Susan Says:

I have to say that I love your website. If I am ever in the Philly area I will be sure to stop by. The projects you put on your website are really awesome. I did make the split 9 patch tablerunner as a Xmas gift for a special relative and she loved it.

I’m a quilter and right now I have about 5 projects in various stages. My big achievement this year is entering a quilt in a show. The show is in April and I’m excited to be a part of it.

    Please keep sewing!

  137. Andrea (noricum) Says:

    Happy birthday!

It’s probably not too impressive to most, but this year I bought a pair of somewhat large men’s jeans, and added tucks until they fit me. :) (I hate that I can’t find 100% cotton pants in the women’s section.) Also nice: I hemmed them without getting in a really foul mood. Perhaps I’m getting better with my sewing machine?

As of this weekend, I now have a dedicated sewing table, so hopefully I’ll get more sewing done. :)

  138. Holly Says:

My biggest accomplishment is learning to sew-especially discovering the joys of handsewing through your bird pattern! I have loved working on my little mobile, and it has made me excited for many more projects in the future.

  139. Toby Says:

Congrats and Happy Birthday! I enjoy your blog and wish I could see your shop…maybe some day. Or just try and expand here to Texas ;)

My biggest accomplishment since I am still basicly a beginner, if getting a better grasp and understanding of sewing vocabulary.

Keep up with the fabulous sight. It has inspired a good portion of the things I have sewn!

  140. tina Says:

    Happy birthday!!!

My biggest accomplishment is I finally get my act together and learned to sew!!! Since I got my sewing machine 3 month ago, I have made myself a skirt and a couple of matching fabric basket!

  141. Rossie Says:

My biggest achievement was keeping an awesome Flickr group going!

    http://www.flickr.com/groups/freshmodernquilts/

  142. Elise Says:

Well, finally I did it – signed up for a sewing class, took the plunge and learned how to thread the machine…beleive me, that was a biggie.

I have a great instructor who enables even a newbie like me to have the confidence to go for it!

  143. louise Says:

achieved some funky pink/white felt snowflakes…patchworrk quilted coasters…

  144. Brooke Says:

I sewed three quilts this year. 2 were gifts and one was for myself because I loved them so much. I was afraid of quilting, but now I see how fun they are to do. Love Sewing!

  145. sue Says:

so far my biggest acomplishment this year is sewing curtains for my kitchen with a forties flair. Love vintage look and feel, but like being able to do it on a modern (not tredle) sewing machine. I also embroidered some dishtowels for my vintage look kitchen, and as gifts for friends.

  146. Emily Says:

My biggest accomplishment was finishing a table runner I started three years ago. Evidently, I’m a slow sewer. But I DID it! And I can’t wait to start my next project!!!

  147. Mindy Says:

My biggest achievement would have to be finally getting brave enough to put a zipper in. It wasn’t the neatest job, but I finally overcame my fear of even trying it. I’m hoping I’ll do a better job next time!

  148. Upstatemomof3 Says:

This year I made curtains and a picture for the wall in my daughters room. The picture is cross stitiched and the curtains are quilted. I love to sew but these days it is hard to find the time. :)

  149. Heleen Says:

Congratulations! Happy Birthday. Thank you for al te inspiration and the wonderful ideas. This year I learned how to applicate and quilt by machine. I did averything by hand but now I can make much more. Most of the things I make for family and friends.

  150. Marlene Says:

    Happy Birthday!

I think my biggest accomplishment this year was learning to sew in zippers. I always avoided this … heck … I was downright afraid of ‘em! But, I persisted and was able to do it! Now my sisters are bugging me for more zippered pouches … they’re not hesitating with their requests!

I love your site! I bought your Apple a Day pattern (no zippers!) and will be trying it out very soon so that I can carry my lunch to work in style!

  151. Eija Says:

Congratulations on your first year! As a beginner there have been many questions, frustrations, and mistakes and my biggest accomplishment is that despite all those mistakes and frustrations I’m still trying and still learning. I think that says a lot to all the possibilities of creating that can happen with sewing and how gratifying it is to say, ” I made that!”

  152. Bloom Says:

A very happy 1st birthday to you! My most significant achievement in the last year would have been making a quilt in a week for my eldest daughter’s 13th birthday. This may not sound like much for some people, but for slow old, procrastinator, perfectionist me, it was a wonder! It is here if you’re interested:
    http://bloomandblossom.blogspot.com/2008/10/at-last-i-got-to-local-botanic-gardens.html

  153. isabel f. Says:

My biggest achievement was put a zipper in something! :D D

  154. Anne Says:

The biggest accomplishment was making a quilt to donate for the Quilts of Valor. But, I also finished all my other sewing projects except for one.

  155. Yvonne Says:

    Happy 1st birthday!

My greatest achievement would be sewing summer clothes in winter, and now, sewing winter clothes. My daughter is well-prepared and has enough pretty clothes :)

  156. Ashley Says:

First time sewer!!! I made a birthday crown for my little boy who just turned one! Now, I’m going for a quilt!!!! EXCITED! I use the sewing machine my grandma used, and I’m learning, one stitch at a time.

  157. susi Says:

    Happy Birthday,
Last year I sewed a quilt for my husband.
A foto is on my blog.

  158. Rochelle Says:

My two biggest sewing achievements of the past 12 months are – finally sewing my son a sleeping bag. It’s a technical bag, microfleece, thinsulate, ripstop nylon, for canoe camping. I put it off for an entire year, but now that it’s complete, I am so pleased to have made it, finished it, and have it look fairly professional! The second biggest thing for me was to sew 75yards of fabric in February. As part of a no-buying, lots of sewing challenge, I sewed gifts, spring wardrobes, and household items, and worked my way through 75 yards of my stash, and bought absolutely no fabric! (I’m making up for it now … shop shop shopping all through March!)

  159. Concha Says:

Well, I managed to open my very own etsy shop and sell some of my (sewn) creations!

  160. Megan Says:

My biggest accomplishment so far this year is learning how to stipple! I just stippled my first quilt (my first time doing any kind of free motion quilting actually) and I’m happy with how it turned out!

  161. Susanna Says:

I made little heart sachets, which of course needed curved seams, which could either make or break the entire item. I keep wobbling off course but I’ve IMPROVED. Because it’s been so oddly difficult for me, I’d say that’s a bigger accomplishment than even the baby quilt with hand applique that I made for my god daughter.

  162. Amanda Calloway Says:

Learning to sew which has made my year. I have sewn so many projects including Bday and Christmas presents. It has all been so much fun. My husband is in the military so I always need to find a hobby when we move and this is what started my love of fabric. While on vacation last year we stopped at your store and then shortly I found out the blog I had been looking at was your store. I have thought that was so cool. I am an Amy Butler junkie. Happy Birthday Spool.

  163. Tina Says:

    Happy Birthday Spool!!!

I’ve always considered myself a non-sewer who just happened to own a sewing machine.
When two of my nieces announced that they were expecting, I was determined to make them quilts. Your fabric selection was fabulous and inspiring, it really makes you want to sew! The quilts were a huge hit and as a result, I got a commission to make a quilt, from a woman who attended the baby shower. So thanks Spool, for helping me overcome my fear of sewing!

  164. Erin Says:

Thanks so much for teaching me how to sew! Your shop and the fabrics you carry inspired me to give it a shot! I took the sewing 101 class and loved it! bought my own machine and got to work! My projects this year include the bag from class, the stuffed birds from your pattern online, the machine cover (also from your pattern online), 2 scarves from the shot cloth, 2 barcelona skirts, a tie, and 12 adorable burp cloths and 2 fabric baby balls. I am having so much fun expressing my creativity! Thanks for getting me started!

  165. Lisa Says:

I finally was able to follow a pattern!

Now this may not sound like a big accomplishment, but for me this was huge. Being somewhat new to sewing and having the attention span of a gnat, I was overjoyed when I was finally able to follow an Amy Butler apron pattern, make something beautiful, and then go on to follow two more AB patterns for pants and an Anna Maria Horner pattern for a handbag. I’m on a roll!

And I would love, love, LOVE that fat quarter bundle. Thanks for the chance to win.

  166. Jeannette Says:

Happy Birthday!! I’m so glad you’re in Philly!!! I’ve only been down to the shop once, but I ADORED it and hopefully can make it down again soon (maybe for the stitch party, we’ll see how the baby’s doing).

For me, I think my biggest accomplishment has been making sewing more a part of my daily life. Sewing what I need, as much as possible. I’ve made clothes for my kids, gifts for friends, have worked up the bravery to sew something besides skirts for myself, and even have started an etsy shop (diber.etsy.com). I can see my skills improving and that makes me excited.

I just started sewing a couple of years ago after five years in grad school studying music history. Grad school was awesome, but also extremely difficult–and an unfortunate byproduct of academia is that it makes you feel like you’re never good enough. Sewing is helping me come out of that mindset. Not that I’m perfect, but I CAN do things!

  167. Janet Says:

I made my first quilt this year. I am now hooked! I am working on my second quilt top now with plans for a third!

  168. JennyC.No3 Says:

My biggest achievement is definitely … learning how to sew!! I took one of your classes with my Mom and Sister and I’ve been hooked ever since then. I love it so much and sew so often I’m even opening my own Etsy shop next month! Thanks for opening your shop – it has benefited so many people and everyone I know who sews loves it!
