Block Swap! The Killing Room hd

Tomorrow night is our second monthly Stitch Party! We had so much fun with all of you last month

, we hope you’ll join us again. As usual, there will be goodie bags and door prizes. Please stop by from 5-8 PM, have a snack and a drink, hang with other crafty folk, and show off what you’ve been working on!

Stitch Party also marks the start of our brand new Block Swap! The swap takes place over the next 6 months. Each month you will make and swap 12 nine-patch blocks, either from our recommended prints or from your stash. At the end, you will have 72 unique blocks to make into a new quilt top. We have chosen an inspiration fabric, to give us a color scheme and lend cohesion to our scrappy quilt! It only costs $5.00 to participate in 6 months of swaptastic goodness!

Sign-ups start at Stitch Party, but if you can’t make it you can still participate. Just stop by the shop for all the details!

See you at Stitch Party!

Silk Pillow

Silk Pillow 102 Dalmatians hd

Dark Blue movie full

Rocky V film

We recently got our shipment from Della Q Textiles of beautiful silk fat quarters

. The colors and textures are so rich and beautiful. We wanted to make something simple yet interesting to show off these luxe fabrics. Pillows have been on the brain in a big way here at Spool, so we dove right in with this stripey version of our envelope pillow. These two gorgeous covers were made with just one fabric bundle. I love seeing all the fabrics playing together so nicely!

Working with silk can be a little different than sewing with quilting cotton. First of all, silk frays more quickly, so be sure to apply a featherweight interfacing to the fabric before you cut it. This holds everything together, and makes it a little more sturdy for construction purposes. You also want to be careful with your pinning, as pinholes will be more apparent in silk. Try pinning just in the seam allowances of your project. Take your time sewing, because silk is a bit more slippery than you may be used to. You can hand wash or dry clean your finished project. These extra precautions are well worth the time to stitch with something new and end up with something so pretty!

If you’d like to add a little shine to your home decor, we are having a class March 15 & 22 from 1-3PM for a cost of $40 plus materials. If you aren’t local or can’t make the class, we will be including the pillow pattern with every purchase of silk fat quarters. Enjoy!

I Heart You!

Rocky V release

I was flipping through Shannon Okey’s gorgeous Pillow Book Ransom psp and came across this heart pillow. I knew we had to make it for Valentine’s Day! We chose Kaffe Fassett’s wild diagonal stripe for the front and a bright, bubble gum pink Kona Cotton for the sides of this puffy pillow. Alana reversed the fabrics and made her own mini version as well. The result is so darn adorable. Everyone who sees it just grabs it and hugs it. Just the feeling we were looking for!

Pillows are such a simple way to change your surroundings. With a little fabric and a little time, your decor is transformed! We have added a new Pillow Series to our class schedule. With designs for every taste and style, these one day sessions will help you build your skills and add flair to your home. See you there!Desert Saints ipod

Roman Stripes Quilt Class

Roman Stripes Quilt

I am loving my new quilt top! The top is composed of half square triangles, that I made easily and efficiently with Cozy Quilt Designs Roman Stripes pattern, and Garden Friends Fabric Kit. I love the method for making the blocks in this pattern, and the configurations are endless. You can see some of the others I tried here. In the end, I liked the orderly design of the original pattern, as a nice contrast to the wild fabrics I used.

Roman Stripes Quilt

We are having a class on this fun, modern quilt on February 14, 21, 28, and March 7 from 2-4 PM. The class fee is $80 plus materials. We will be using jellyrolls to minimize rotary cutting and get right into sewing! Jellyrolls are precut 2.5″ strips in coordinating colors. I will have the kit I used available, as well as other color options. You will leave class with a completed 60″ x 75″ quilt top and we will discuss different quilting options.

If you would like to choose your own fabrics, be sure to stop in ahead of time so that I can cut them for you. Please call the shop to reserve your space. See you there!

Me & Jay @ Stitch Party

Thanks to everyone who came out on Friday for Stitch Party. We had a great time and I know Jay McCarroll did too. Your projects were beautiful, and I loved seeing all of our customers having such a good time!

Our camera battery died at the beginning of the night, can you believe it? Thankfully one of our sewing instructors, Cathy, had her husband bring a camera. He took some great snaps, including the one of me and Jay above. Thanks, Chris! Fashion bloggers, Tom & Lorenzo of Project Rungay, also came to our rescue. Be sure to check out the fantastic interview they did with Jay here Stark Raving Mad film . Thanks so much, TLo!

Spool was packed, and Jay did an amazing job of chatting with everyone and signing tons of head shots. Door prize winners received fat quarter bundles, signed movie posters and tickets for Jay’s new film, Eleven Minutes. Thanks, Jay!

Jay's Amazing Samples

Jay and his sisters brought many of the samples that Jay used at Quilt Market. The quilt at the top left was made by Jay’s sister, Jill, using all of his fabrics…amazing! It was so nice to meet you ladies!

Henry and the BIGBUG!

Henry, Cathy’s son, was especially taken with this one applique panel. Every time he looked at it he said, “BIGBUG!”. Indeed!

Cathy & Henry

Cathy made matching quilted vests for herself and Henry, in honor of Jay’s visit. Here they are putting away bolts after the fabric frenzy at the party. I wish we had gotten a good photo of Alana, because her outfit was gorgeous too. We’ll get you next time, I promise.

I hope a good time was had by all. Please join us for Stitch Party next month on February 27th from 5-8 PM. Thanks again, everyone!
