Birdie Ornaments
December 8th, 2008Decorating the Christmas tree is one of my favorite holiday activities. This year, not only did I get to decorate my own tree at home, I got to decorate my shop tree as well! What better way to decorate than to give our favorite birds a place to nest for the holidays.
With our free bird pattern (downloadable in the left sidebar) that we used in our Bird Mobile, we sewed up blue & white birds for Hanukkah and red & green for Christmas. As we have found here at the shop, little ones love to play with them and grown-ups can’t get over the cuteness! These little guys would make a great gift topper, or a sweet hostess gift for all the Holiday parties coming up. One bundle of fat quarters will make enough for everyone on your list, and you will find sewing them a little addictive! Take some stitching time for yourself, and then enjoy the look on your gift recipient’s face as they say, “Awww, I love it! It’s so cute! You made this? Amazing!”.

I *love* the bird ornaments! I tried making those little birds a while ago, and I was having some difficulty getting the pattern lined up. Would you recommend sewing them by hand or by machine?

I like the birds on the Christmas tree, but I love the quilt background. Is there any chance that this pattern is available or is there a kit for this one? Thank you for all the good ideas.

I’ve got some spool birdies up on my tree already! I hope to stop by the shop to see the new ones, the pattern was so perfect as an ornament, thank you again!

Thanks so much everyone! I’m happy to spread a little holiday cheer!
Sandra- You can sew them by hand or by machine. If you’re going to machine stitch them, I would definitely do a little pinning. expecially where the dots line up. Sewing curves can be tricky,so just take your time.
Khristal- The quilt is a free pattern, called Bohemian Quilt, available here:http://annamariahorner.blogspot.com/. I don’t have a kit made up for it, but I’m sure you can come up with something wonderful!

Made these birdies in black and white as cake toppers for my friends’ wedding cake, then sewed hangers on them for their first Christmas tree! I also taught some mommy friends how to make these for our “Mommy and Me” Christmas tree in a local fundraiser. They were super-cute!!! Thanks for the pattern!

I made the mobile a few months ago, then saw this post and was inspired to make them as Christmas gifts (instead of buying Christmas cards). So far, I’ve made 20, but I’m sure that number will double by the weekend.

I made a youtube video of piecing these together. It’s sideways (sorry) but it covers the basics of how these go together.

Love these birds, just found fabric today to start making a flock for next xmas. Thank you Seth for the video, I found it very helpful – only wished it lasted long enough to see you sew and finish one bird, little hints make such a difference to a ‘first-timer’.
