Bird Mobile
May 16th, 2008I had been toying with the idea of a mobile project and our adorable bird pattern seemed the perfect fit. I knew it would be gorgeous! What I hadn’t expected, though, is how some tree branches and a few carefully placed eye-hooks would transform this project into a work of art!
This would be a welcome addition to a baby’s room or a great project for a baby shower. A single bird would be a whimsical way to highlight favorite prints around your home. Since all this birdie takes is two pieces of fabric and a needle & thread, it makes a great travel project. There are many possibilites, plus they’re just so darn cute!
Let us help you get started on your flock! Handsewing is relaxing and rewarding and a small project like this is a great way to learn. This a free pattern from Spool, and we will be offering demonstrations on how to stitch these little guys throughout the summer. Enjoy!
P.S. You can now download a pdf of this pattern from our sidebar. If you’d like to share your finished birds, we’d love to see them! You can join our flickr group here. Have fun!

For those of us not in your area (Portland, OR says HI!), we’d love the pattern. My girl would FLIP to have this in her room — quite the burgeoning sewer at age 7.

Thanks, Mariss and Stephanie! I’m so glad you like the birdies!
May 18th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Oh, these birds (or “berts” as my daughter would call them) are delightful! Is a pattern available for purchase to those of us not in PA for the tutorial?
May 20th, 2008 at 10:03 am
For those of you not in the Philly area, we hope to have a free pdf of the pattern available later this week. Thanks for your birdie enthusiasm!
May 20th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Hi Aimee,
I am Tim’s mom, he and Vic have made a garden and I would love to make them some of the lovely birds for it, would you please put me on the list for the pattern? I hope to come to Philly this summer and will see you then. Great shop, great site, love your new patterns.

I also look forward to seeing the pattern for the birdies! I would love to make some for my little girl.

Oh, I’d just love to be able to get a copy of that pattern (free or otherwise), but don’t live in Philadelphia. Any chance it could be a download? It’s just beautiful.

May 29th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Fabulous!
Can you tell me how the birds are attached to the branches?
May 29th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
The birds are attached with a dark thread sewn through the underside of the bird and wrapped around the branch several times. I hope that helps!

Made my first bird and it looks more like a stuffed turkey. Clearly, I put too much batting in the belly, neck and tail. When I looked back at your picture, discovered the tail was not stuffed. Was trying to get any wrinkles out and it grew and grew. Hummm . . . just how much do you stuff for best results?
Also, my beak is not as cute as yours. Any suggestions?
Otherwise, came out oh so pretty . . . just no center of gravity to sit upright.
Its mother loves it . . . that’s me.
June 1st, 2008 at 12:31 pm
I fell in Love with your birds.Thank you for being so kind to share with all of us. Johanna
June 1st, 2008 at 1:05 pm
Hi Gail,
Just like a turkey, don’t overstuff! These guys really only need a small amount of stuffing. That said, fat little budgies are just as cute! As far as the beak goes, all of ours have come out differently. Depending on your how your seam allowance folds inside the bird, you may get a beak that looks more like a hawk than a sparrow. Keep experimenting- your bird needs a flock to belong to!

I love the bird mobile and am attempting to make one for my baby’s room. I was wondering though why the pattern calls for 2 belly pieces to be cut out? The directions indicate to only use one of the belly pieces (I think?). Am I supposed to be doubling up the belly pieces so it’s stronger?

I am getting ready to try these birds for my daughter-on-the-way’s nursery. What do you think about stuffing them with some rice or beans to give them a little weight to stand up on their own? Has anyone tried this?
June 4th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
[...] at this lovely bird mobile with template from Spool fabric shop in Philadelphia.
June 4th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Hi Suzanne B,
There is no need to cut 2 pieces for the belly. The instructions are meant to read Fabric #1 & Fabric #2, since you are using 2 contrasting fabrics.
OTJen,
A little rice or beans would work well to get these birds to stand up straight! We usued a little rice in the bottom most bird of our mobile to get the balance right.
Hope that helps!

June 9th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Hi Karen,
When making the mobile, we started with the bottom branches first. We placed the birds where we wanted them and then tried out the string at various points along the branch to find the correct balance. Then, we worked our way up. It’s definitely a bit of trial and error, so hang in there!

Hi Nick,
Michael brought in branches from his backyard for the birdies to sit on. We used Valdani’s hand dyed 100% cotton quilting thread to attach the birds to the branches and to hang the branches from one another. Tiny eye hooks, to thread the Valdani through, keep everything in place.
Hope that helps!

I posted a link for these on the quilting forum where I spend a lot of time with other quilter. They are have a ball making these little guys. I reduced the pattern somewhat and made me some with some beautiful Christmas fabric for my tree this year. I was wondering how you might feel about me hosting a swap for these on our quilting board(HGTV) ? I think these are just adorable and really do liven up my sewing room. Wish I could show you some of the ones I made with fabric I had done crazy quilting on. Everyday when I go to see what everyone is doing I see many have made more birds. Thank you for this pattern, and if you want to go have a look at some of their birds, they are on the HGTV quilting board. And you will also see that you were given full credit for this pattern. Just thought you like to know we are having fun making these.

Hi, these birds are wonderful, and I’ve just finished making a load of them – now I just need to go out and find some twigs to complete the mobile! I wonder if I could ask two questions: first, do you know if invisible (nylon) thread is strong enough to use for hanging the mobile, based on 7 birds and maybe 3 not-too-huge twigs? Second, what’s the best way to fix the mobile to the ceiling?
August 24th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Hi Rebecca,
I think nylon thread would work beautifully. We hung our mobile from a medium sized eye hook . I hope you have fun with the mobile and if you’d like to share a photo when you finish, please add it to our flickr group, http://www.flickr.com/groups/spoolbirdies/. Thanks!

Just hung my mobile in my baby’s room today. It looks really cute!!
I went with pink and brown birds to match the colors and the theme. I also had a hard time hanging and balancing my creation. I finally figured out that if I hung from the birds rather than the twigs I had better control. I used twist pins and monofilament and started from the bottom and went up. I camouflaged the pins with ribbon and bows. Works great for a baby girl room. I will post on the website. Thanks again for the pattern.

Could you please post a picture or explain how you attach the medium sized hooks to the twigs?
Thanks!
September 12th, 2008 at 8:42 am
Hi Dinah,
The medium sized eye hook is used to attach the whole mobile to the ceiling. You want to use very small eye-hooks with the twigs in order to thread your string through. Eye hooks have threads on one side and an almost closed circular hook on the other. You will screw the threaded side into the twig. Using small enough ones will help not to split the wood as you are doing this.
Hope that helps!

I have a question – how do you get them to stay on the branch?
September 27th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Hi aaurora!
We tie the birds onto the branch! We used a nice dark olive thread and stitched through the bottom of the bird and around the branch. Hope that helps!

It may make it easier if you press the raw edges of the tail over before you stitch it together. This will make a nice crisp edge to slip stitch. I hope that helps!

Hi Lyn- The pattern is a free .pdf located in our left sidebar. Enjoy!
Jenn- I’m sorry you’re having trouble! My advice is to take it slow, and maybe cheat a little on the seam allowance. The tail opening is narrow, but that’s what gives it such an elegant shape. Good luck!

I’m having a lot of trouble trying to balance the mobile. Any tips?
November 13th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Hi Michele!
I would start from the bottom and work your way up. It does take patience! We used a little rice in the bottom most bird for a counter weight to the branches. Take a look at our Flickr group, to see the different combinations people have made with less branches. They are beautiful, and probably not as tricky! Be sure to send photos when you’re done!

I am going to have this mobile made using some of her childhood clothing, my husband, mine, her sister, and the grooms clothing too, as well as new fabric.
Then we are going to hang it at the entrance of the tent, and all quests will walk under it, as well as the bride and groom.

December 17th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Thank you so much for this pattern! It’s awesome and so so easy to make. I made four mobiles for each of my siblings for a Christmas present (in their favourite colours, of course).
My tips/techniques:
I used tiger wire (nylon wrapped wire commonly used for beaded jewelery) with loops made with crimping beads to suspend the branches.
For some variation, I stitched up and down the length of the tail using different stitch patterns to simulate feathers. For some of them, I didn’t bother to tuck the unfinished edge of the fabric in, and gently frayed the edges. It makes each one all the more unique.
Instead of regular thread, I used embroidery floss to attach the birds to the branches. As you wrap the floss around the branch, you can space each strand out a bit so it looks even more like bird feet. Tres cute!
To help me turn them, I used a chopstick (plastic works best because the fabric won’t get caught on a splinter) to push the fabric through–an added bonus is that you can use it to manipulate the fabric/seam to really define the beak. I would imagine a crochet hook or an unsharpened pencil would work just as well.
I shrunk the pattern by 50% and filled the birds with a mixture of fiberfill and cat nip. They’re GREAT presents for kitties/kitty lovers!
For hanging individual birds (as ornaments, etc), as I was finishing the seam along the head, I inserted a small loop of ribbon into the right-side of the fabric (with the ends of the ribbon sticking out the wrong-side) and stitched over it. When I turned it, the loop at the top of the head makes it very simple to attach it to anything.
Again, thank you so much for this wonderful pattern!

Hi Christina- Try making your stitches closer together, and don’t over stuff the birdie! You could also try pressing the seam allowances to one side to create a more crisp edge that will hold the shape better. I hope that helps!
January 29th, 2009 at 10:19 am
Hi CK! Let’s try this- place the Body piece of fabric print side up on the table. Then, place the Belly piece print side down on top of it. Then starting at tail, align the raw edges, and pin up one side of the fabric towards the head. Make sure that you match up the dots that you transferred from the pattern piece, and sew from dot to dot. Repeat for the other side. Curvrd seams can be a little tricky, so take your time! I hope that helps!

Yes we did it. (see my notes back in November 2008)
My daughter got married in May, I made the mobile – we hung it above the dance floor,
she and I and her fiance made 100 birds and used them as favors and to hold down the menu cards on the tables under the tent.
a wedding to remember….. Everyone loved the birds some quests took too many home.

I love these. I am going to try and figure out a way to make them more of a toy for my kids, 2, 3 and 6. One thought I had is to put a velco circle underneath each bird. I will try and cover a wine gift box with brown felt and turn that into a bird house. I am hoping the velcro would allow the bird to be placed anywhere on the box. I also intend to make birds out of seasonal material, so at each holiday I can give my kids a new bird! I will show pictures if it comes out good! Thanks for the pattern!
