Bird Mobile

Bird Mobile

I had been toying with the idea of a mobile project and our adorable bird pattern seemed the perfect fit. I knew it would be gorgeous! What I hadn’t expected, though, is how some tree branches and a few carefully placed eye-hooks would transform this project into a work of art!

Three Little Birds

This would be a welcome addition to a baby’s room or a great project for a baby shower. A single bird would be a whimsical way to highlight favorite prints around your home. Since all this birdie takes is two pieces of fabric and a needle & thread, it makes a great travel project. There are many possibilites, plus they’re just so darn cute!

Circle of Birds

Let us help you get started on your flock! Handsewing is relaxing and rewarding and a small project like this is a great way to learn. This a free pattern from Spool, and we will be offering demonstrations on how to stitch these little guys throughout the summer. Enjoy!

P.S. You can now download a pdf of this pattern from our sidebar. If you’d like to share your finished birds, we’d love to see them! You can join our flickr group here. Have fun!

Thank you SO much for this wonderful pattern. I’ve made one mobile for a friend’s baby’s nursery in different shades of green, and am making one for my own grandson just as soon as his parents decide what colors his nursery will be (due in Nov.). 3 others have asked me to make them a mobile too, so all my fabric scraps are being put to good use. We have our own little forest so it was easy to find just the right shaped twigs and branches. Thank you again.

Hi I was just wondering where I could download the PDF of the bird pattern?

Di September 10, 2010 at 1:22 am

I have only just found your blog and I like what I see. I am trying to find the download button from your side bar for the bird mobile. Can you email it to me?

Mary September 10, 2010 at 10:42 pm

How are the birds attached to the branches–just eye hooks?

Laura September 11, 2010 at 9:40 am

Mary-The birds are tied to the branches with thread, hot glue would probably also do the trick.

Laura September 11, 2010 at 9:41 am

Di & Katie-The pattern is in our right side bar under free patterns. Enjoy!

Soooo…I made some awesome looking birds. I put them on their twigs. I just started balancing them (from the bottom up), but the birds keep flipping back -not completely upside down- even with the hooks in place! The branch stays even but the birds really just don’t want to stay right side up. Anybody have tips?

I love this idea, exactly what I have been searching for to decorate my girls’ bedroom– but I have one question (probably an obvious one!)– I assume the birds are stuffed with some sort of filling before getting sewn shut? Thanks in advance, they are so adorable!!

Hi,
Novice sewer question. Are you turning under the tail and what kind of stitch are you using to sew it closed?

kate October 21, 2010 at 1:33 am

Also, How big are the finished birds? Mine looks giant compared to the pics! :)

I love it! What a great way to use scraps and what a great idea for a gift. I can see it in a baby’s room with the extra fabric from the crib set and pillows. It would even make a wonderful themed crib set with appliqued birds on the bumper.

this has been a most wonderful project, working with so many delicious colors. it will add joy and beauty to my new babe’s life. thank you Spool!

i am now trying to find the balance of the sticks (with birds already attached). what is the trick? any tips to the balancing process? so far it hasn’t been exactly easy. thank you!

I used the pattern to create a mobile for our SweetPea’s nursery, and now I am so crazy about them, I’m toying with “hatching” some more birds for the Christmas tree. My question is….do you think that you could use a fat quarter size fabric and make smaller birds? I think fat quarters are 5″x5″? Would this work, or would they be too tiny? Thanks!

anna November 9, 2010 at 7:14 am

Perfetto!!!!!! :)

jess November 12, 2010 at 3:17 pm

oops….i meant charm packs, not fat quarter size. Ah duh.

I’m having the same problem a few others are having…I balanced the birds on the sticks but when I put the string on the eye hooks the birds flip back but the stick stays balanced…I’ve been working on it for weeks! Any tips? I love the birds and plan to use them in my nursery! Thanks for the pattern.

I love love LOVE these birds. We have a baby girl on the way and I made them for her nursery. I’m going to hang them from birdcage style perch over her changing table. They were so easy to sew and the perfect size to attract a baby’s attention. Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. :)

Fantastic bird pattern. I haven’t sewn in 20 years but I was able to whip up a big batch of this birds for a mobile for the baby we are expecting. We sanded a big branch and sewed birds organically scattered around, then hung some small free swinging branches below to add more movement. We did a lot of the bellies in strong black/white patterns since it’s the best contrast for newborn’s eyes. Very grateful to you for the wonderful idea and pattern!
