Hello World
March 16th, 2008When Laura and I first talked about opening a fabric shop it was less about planning a business and more about daydreaming. We talked about the fabrics we’d carry and the books and patterns we’d stock; which brand of thread and the pins that we like. We’d surf the internet looking at new fabric collections and reading blogs, and email each other links saying, this would be great, and, how cute is this?
Suddenly we were scouting out locations and thinking about fixtures. The conversations became longer and more serious. We started a budget.
Already people have asked if we got the name Spool from Loop. The answer is no. Spool came up when I was trying to find a name for Loop. At the time, we thought it would be a great name for a fabric shop. Shortly after we met, I even told Laura, I have a great name for a fabric shop. She loved it, and we went back to our knitting.
After thinking about Spool (we now called it by name) for more than a year, we realized that we were serious and the planning began. We met with sales representatives from our favorite companies, we ordered books and thread and needles. When the hair salon next-door to Loop moved, we signed a lease and began renovating. The dust settled, the fabric arrived, and yesterday we opened the door. Whew!
As much fun as we’ve had putting Spool together, now the real fun begins because we can share it with you. We hope you’ll join us and explore the exciting world of sewing!

I love Loop. I KNOW I will love Spools. Maybe I will finally create a quilt/wall hanging that has been in the planning stages for 25+ years!!
Good luck folks.

Congratulations! I peeked through the window yesterday while walking the dog and I love the fabrics!! I’ve always loved Loop. My fiance used to live across the street and when I would visit from Detroit I would look out his living room window to see if you were open and then run across the street. Now I live nearby and I can’t wait to learn to sew!

I’m so excited about this shop! I love Loop and I just got into sewing. In fact, I had already devoured everything on Purlbee’s website and was a little frustrated that New Yorkers had so many great fabric options. This is wonderful, I hope you can include online tutorials like Purlbee too.

I peeked in the window this morning while out for a Koigu grab next door. It’s beautiful and inspiring, but I’m determined to shop with a project in mind, so give me a few minutes. All good wishes and congratulations!
